But I begin to hibernate, and I forget that sometimes. It sneaks up on me. I find myself sleeping more, napping more, and eating “Autumn Foods” – like soups and stews. The change in daylight hours is noticeable, and I want to burrow in to some place cozy.
I want to honor that my body needs different things at different times of year. I try to go with the flow of the seasons. There are also some seasonal memories that can be subtle or not-so-subtle, and may do well with some healing “Autumn Tapping.” For example, the way the light is so low in the sky, or the color of the leaves, or the feeling that it’s getting colder every day – these things can be subconscious reminders of something from our past. If you find yourself triggered emotionally, but no particular event, try scanning your seasonal memory. Is there something that took place in September or October that may be being triggered for you? Yes, you can Tap on seasonal emotions. They are very real.
Back in October of 1987 I went through my final throes of alcoholism, and I put down the drink and “got sober” in AA on the day before Halloween. There were many years afterwards when I would have “drunk dreams,” or “AA dreams,” and it would confound me. Until I realized that it was that time of year. The time of year that was the anniversary of my very worst drinking behavior. And subsequently, detoxing. And even though I hadn’t had a drink in many years, the Autumn shadows and leaf colors caused a subconscious memory trigger. I never experienced those dreams in February or June! And for many years now, I’ve not experienced them again – for which I’m grateful. That seasonal response has been very helpful as I work with clients!
How do the seasonal changes affect you? I’d love to hear.
